Super Fling Boogie Challenges

Dear Friends,

We have just kicked off our Super Fling Boogie!!

Your challenge for today is to do a 27 fling boogie underneath your kitchen sinks! Get rid of all the things that you do not use. That cabinet seems to be a breeding ground for all things that we don't know where else to put them. Old rags, empty cleanser bottles, old jars and containers and much more. Toss or recycle whatever you can and have fun!!

Kelly

PS - look for more challenges to come, if you don't need to do this particular challenge, do a 27 fling boogie some where else that needs it!

Dear Friends,

Today is day 4 of our Super Fling Boogie!!

Your challenge for today is to put out those fires:

Hot Spot Fire Drill!!

A hot spot is an area, when left unattended with gradually take over. One favorite analogy is of a hot spot in a forest fire, if left alone will eventually get out of hand and burn up the whole forest. This is what happens in our homes. If left unattended the hot spot will grow and take over the whole room as well as making the house look awful. When you walk into a room, the Hot Spots are the first thing you see. Why do we have Hot Spots? We lay a piece of paper down on a flat surface, because we will not take the time to deal with it. That one piece of paper is like a clutter magnet and before you know it, the simple piece of paper becomes the spark that turns into a raging inferno that takes over your living areas and makes your home look messy.

Identify your Hot Spots right now. Go to your front door and stand there as if you were entering your home for the first time. What do you see? A pile on the dining room table or another pile on your sofa table? I want you to set your timer for 5 minutes and put out one Hot Spot. You are going to be so surprised at how much you can do in 5 minutes.

Here is your assignment;

Go to your front door, stand with your back to the door and find your first hot spot. The very first one you see. Set your timer for only 5 minutes and work on clearing it out. At the top of the next hour, do the same thing; Go back to the front door and find another hot spot! After you have put out that fire; grab a glass of water and celebrate your accomplishment of clearing out a hot spot! When you make it fun, you will get the job done! At the top of any hour you can, set your timer for 5 minutes and clear a hot spot!

Before you know it, your Hot Spots will be cool and soothing to the eye and your home will look cleaner!

Ready? Set? GO!!!!

Kelly

PS - do not be a perfectionist and wait for the top of the hour to do your first Hot Spot Fire Drill - go do it NOW!

PPS - Don't forget to go and post your pounds on our Super Fling Boogie Pound Meter, so far you all have tossed, recycled or donated over 40,000 pounds! Here is the link to the SFB meter:

Dear Friends,

It is Super Fling Boogie time, we are revving up the de-cluttering! Before you read further make sure you understand that we are doing this in BabySteps. We are not tearing the house apart and then collapsing in exhaustion.

Below are the instructions on how to Declutter - these are step by step instructions that will allow you to begin de-cluttering without becoming overwhelmed.

This is how to Declutter your home, an area of your home. If you are new to de-cluttering then start with a room that you most see the need. This could be your living room, your dining room or your kitchen. Work on the main living areas of your home first. The rooms that you use the most often that are keeping you in CHAOS. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)

You will need garbage bags, 3 boxes, a timer, magic markers, a feather duster or dust rag, and some extra boxes

Label the boxes Give Away, Throw Away, and Put Away

Where to start:

1. Set the timer for 1 hour,30, 15, or 10 minutes , I don't care just as long as you do the job as fast as you can and do not pull out more than you can put a way in that length of time. This means one drawer, one closet or even one shelf in the closet, one magazine rack at a time, under the furniture. Not all of them.

2. Start at the entrance to the room. Work your way around the room clockwise. Do not skip an area. What ever happens to be next, just do it.

3. With boxes at your feet and dust rag in your waist band. Start of clean out and get rid of the thing that do not belong in this room. Don't worry that you do not have a place for everything right now. By the time we finish you will. I promise.

4. When your garbage box, lined with a garbage bag gets full, close it and put it in the trash can or the pickup truck or where ever you keep your trash. Put in a new garbage bag and keep going until the timer goes off.

5. When the give-away box gets full, take it to the car and so that the next time you are out you can donate to the area thrift shop. Do not save for a yard sale. You will be blessed by giving it away. The value can be deducted on you income taxes. Remember you are trying to get rid of clutter. Not relocate it somewhere else in your home. Grab another box. And get to work.

6. When the put away box gets full, take the box in your arms and run around the house and put the items in the room where they belong. If they have a place, put them there, if not put them in the room where they logically belong. By the time you have finished you will have a place for everything and everything will be in it's place.

7. If the timer goes off, You are required to put away all the boxes, but first you have to empty all of them. As fast as you can.

8. Decide how often you are going to declutter a section of this room. I want you to do a little every day. Let me warn you. This can become compulsive. Once you get started you will want to clean like a banshee. Don't burn yourself out. I mean it. Only do small amount at a time. When you set the timer you can only do 2 sessions at a time. I know this is a goal that seems unattainable. But we will do it in little pieces.

9. Things to Ask yourself as you get rid of your clutter. Do you love the item? Is it garbage? Have I used it in a year? Do I have another one that is better? Does it have sentimental value that causes me to love it. Or does it give you guilt and make you sad when you see the item. Cleanse this room of everything that does not make you SMILE.

10. Sing this song. "Please release me let me go" as sung from the stuff point of view. It needs to be loved by someone and if you don't love it. GET RID OF IT!

11. Be proud of your accomplishment! Do not look at the room and see all that you have left to do. Look at the room and see how much you did do. The house did not get messy overnight and it will not get clean overnight. It will happen with BabySteps.

************

Please do not use the excuse that you don't have any boxes to declutter with, so you won't do it until you have some. You can use anything! We designed a really cool de-clutter kit that is in our Flyshop. We took something simple and made it inspiring and fun! You can check them out here:

Dear Friends,

Today's challenge is for those of you that are truly having a hard time letting go of things. I have received quite a few emails lately from those that just don't know where to start and how do I let go?

You are all looking at your houses as the big picture, you see every room, garages, attics and basements and just shut down from it all.

I want you to only deal with the main living areas of the house FIRST!

So here is a challenge for you:

Go to your front door, stand in the doorway as if you were just walking in - what do your eyes fall on immediately? That is what I want you to work on. Set your timer for 15 minutes and do a 27 fling boogie - 27 things to throw away first. If you have time left - 27 things to put away. If you have time left - 27 things to give away.

Then set your timer for another 15 minutes - take out the trash immediately, take the give away things to your car and then start putting away what needs to be put away.

That's it for today. ONLY two 15 minute sessions. This is a BabyStep, I have given you something to start with and you can do this I promise! The timer is what forces you to make a decision quickly. The clutter is taking away from the quality of your life.

If it helps you to send me an email telling me what you did - bring it on!! Sometimes when we hold ourselves accountable to others it makes us feel more empowered to accomplish something. Show me your POWER!

Let's Dance!

Kelly

PS - Don't forget to post your pounds on our Super Fling Boogie Meter: http://www.flylady.net/pages/sfb_meter.asp

PPS: Check out our new Declutter kits in the Fly Shop these are fun and easy to use! http://www.flylady.net/pages/FlyShop_declutter.asp

Dear Friends,

Go put on some fun music that you love, set a timer for 15 minutes and boogie your way through the house. We are going to do a 27 fling boogie!! As many times as we can dancing to our music and the timer! Let's grab a trash bag and dance through the house grabbing up anything that needs to be tossed. The small wastebaskets that are in the house, the junk mail piles, etc. It is amazing how much neater the rooms in our house can be when we get rid of the stuff that is just hanging around taking up space that really just needs to be tossed.

Ready? Set! DANCE!!!!

Love,
Kelly

PS - Don't forget to post your pounds on the Super Fling Boogie Pound Meter, you have flung over 129,000 pounds so far! We are flinging through January 31st!

Dear Friends,

We all know that paper clutter is the one type of clutter that seems to take over magically!

Today your challenge is to grab a stack of papers from a pile - any pile, anywhere that it may be and toss 27 pieces. It can be recycled, shredded or thrown out. Whatever you need to do to get those 27 pieces of paper out of that pile.

This will not take you long. If you want to go for one more 27 Fling after you have completed the first 27 fling - go for it, but that is it. Do not pull out every paper you own to go through. Just do this one challenge as fast as you can. We are going to get through the paper clutter!!

Love,
Kelly

As we are flinging through Super Fling Boogie I have a challenge for those of you with school age children! It is the Back Pack Challenge!

It has been several weeks since our children went back to school and I know from experience that the back packs become a big black hole of old papers and oops guess what - notes that were supposed to go home to Mom!! Back Packs to our kids are what our purses are to us!!

Make this fun for your kids, make sure that you are do not yell or sound judgmental if you come across something that your child should have given to you. This is a teaching moment for you and your child. Help your child to understand why flinging the backpack is important and make this challenge part of their weekly routine. If you are a home schooling family - you can apply this challenge to the desk or work area that each individual child uses.

Look for the moments where you can have fun and enjoy what can otherwise seem mundane and boring. You can set a timer and play beat the clock, you can play a counting game with how many things get flung from the back pack, you can use the time to allow your child to show you what they are working on - use your imaginations to have fun with your kids!

Kelly

We Love You All!
Kelly

A few years ago FlyLady and I were speaking at an event in Ohio and we asked the audience to look in their purses and tell us the weirdest item that they could find. We had several that were quite funny. A roll of duct tape, an audio tape - she no longer had anything that played an audio tape - not at home or in her car, a set of keys to a house she no loner owned but by far the best way someone that had a portable breast pump in her purse and she had not breast fed her youngest child in two years!!!

Your surprise challenge today is to set your timer for 15 minutes and do a super fling boogie in your purse, back pack or diaper bag. If you find something that you think is the weirdest item, send it to us! Send an email to FlyCrew@flylady.net with WEIRD in the subject line.

Let's boogie those purses!

Love,
Kelly

This is our last week of our Super Fling Boogie!

So far you all have flung over 350,000 pounds and I know you all have more that can be flung!!

We are going to rev up the challenges and have some fun. Please post your pounds on our Super Fling Boogie Meter, for those of you that are not familiar with this here is some more information:

The Super Fling Boogie works like this - as you declutter, weigh your items before you get rid of them and go to the meter on the homepage and post your pounds tossed. If you donate it, throw it away or recycle it, it all counts. You can guess at the weight if weighing something is not an option. This may sound silly to you - but it is like putting your house on a diet and watching the weight just fall off! It is a great feeling once you get caught up in it. You can post as many times as you need to, you don't have to wait until you have what you think is the perfect amount to post. You can post as you go, this can be so much fun. I challenge you to give it a try!

Here is a direct link to the meter page:

http://www.flylady.net/pages/sfb_meter.asp

Your declutter challenge for this morning is:

This challenge will take you into that hidden avalanche area of winter coats, hat, gloves, mittens, sandals, boots, shoes, sports gear and other falling objects! Yup, you guessed it, the front closet! Set your timer for 15 minutes and tackle that closet one shelf at a time.

If it has been years since anyone has worn those hockey pads, shin guards or baseball cleats, it may be time to make room for new hobbies. If shoes can almost walk out of this closet on their own, you may want to take another look and see how many you can fling! And remember those coat hangers. If the closet rod is so full of empty flimsy wire hangers that you can't use the closet, then see how many you can fling. (Many dry cleaners will take these off of your hands!)

Have fun and stay clear of falling objects! You will be amazed at the difference when you have a place to hang the jackets and put the shoes.

"Clutter attracts more clutter - like a magnetic force. Whenever you catch yourself saying, "I can put this here and do it later," you have created a Hot Spot." - FlyLady (from her bright pink book, "Sink Reflections")

Have a great morning and look for more challenges throughout the day and for the rest of this week. Do not feel guilt or overwhelmed if you do not do the challenges! If you are working outside the home during the day, choose a challenge or two that you can do this evening and set a timer for just 5 minutes, you will be amazed at how much you can fling in 5 minutes! Just jump in when you can and have fun,the Super Fling Boogie is a guilt free Zone!

Love,
Kelly

This is my favorite Declutter challenge of all. If you can get rid this clutter, you will find space in your home you never knew existed.

We are going after our Magazines. Look out National Geographic, here we come! FlyGals, your Fly Spot Alert is to hunt down those home, garden, lifestyle, cooking, parenting, crafting, and other magazines that you have been storing in shelves, plastic tote containers, and in the living room. See how many you can fling, donate, or recycle.

Get your FlyGuys involved!! Ask him to hunt down those sporting, technical, automotive, astronomy, and other magazines that you have been storing in shelves, cardboard boxes, and in the garage or bathroom LOL. See how many you can fling. You will be amazed at the space you will find!

GO POST YOUR POUNDS!!! Magazines are heavy! Go to:

http://www.flylady.net/pages/sfb_meter.asp

I know that every single one of you has at least a pound of magazines or catalogs in your homes! I challenge you all to go and get them out of the house right now! It does not have to be all of them, give yourself permission to toss one pound's worth of magazines and go post your pound on the meter! Ready? Set? GO!!!

Kelly

Dear Friends,

Today is the day that we are going to go after all of that stuff that we have been seduced into buying from shop at home television, infomercials or that special aisle in the store that has "As Seen on TV" labels!! You know those things that we just know has to work as well as we saw the guy on tv using. Some of these items may work great for you and you love them, then there are the rest of those things that are just taking up valuable real estate that you just don't use. Maybe it was because they did not work as well as they did on tv, maybe it is because they are more trouble to use than what they are worth, there are many whys and the biggest one is why am I saving this?

We hold onto these items because we feel guilt that we spent our hard earned money on them and feel like "it is too good to get rid of", trust me it isn't. We hold on to them because one day we are going to use them. If you still have a bedazzler in the box with dust on it, you are not likely to use it anytime soon!! Release the guilt over holding onto these items and get rid of those freeloaders that are taking up space in your home.

If these items are in good, working condition then by all means bless someone else with them. If they are broken, do not work well, or are missing pieces, let them go! Throw them out or recycle them if possible.

Those carpet sweepers, steam facial machines, bedazzlers, electric nail files, rotisserie ovens, cook chicken on a beer can rack, hand held sewing machines, onion slicer and bloom maker, those knives you can cut a can with, smokeless ash trays, funnel cake makers, ice cream makers and more: If you are not using them and loving them, today is the day to get them out!

Give yourself permission to toss anything out that you have brought into your home to "make your life easier" and it just doesn't!!

Go and post your pounds decluttered on our Super Fling Boogie Meter:

http://www.flylady.net/pages/sfb_meter.asp

We have two days left in our Super Fling Boogie! Let's get to Flinging!

Have fun!
Kelly
