Subject: Movement Mission - 5/27/08 - Why Skipping Meals is
Counter-Productive!
Testimonial: Unexpected Strength
Hi Jonathan,
Last year when my family would bike a 7-mile circuit we like, my
husband would pull both our children behind him. It was all I could do
to get myself around!
The other weekend I thought I was up to helping, so we hooked up my 4
year old in a trailer on the back of my bike. My 6 year old was on a
tag-along behind my husband, able to help peddle. At exactly mile 3.5
in this loop, my husband's chain broke.
We ended up putting both boys in the trailer and I pedaled them the
last 3.5 miles while hubby walked/jogged his bike + tag-along. Not
only was I able to make it to the end, I was actually not sore--even
the next day!
I get frustrated at not losing much weight (2-4 pounds in the last 6
weeks depending on the day), but I was so happy to have such a visible
result of the strength I've gained from the no excuse work outs.
Thank you for such useful exercises.
Andrea M.

Why Skipping Meals is Counter-Productive!
Many people try to skip meals to lose weight. Although you would
think this makes sense, it is actually counter-productive. Skipping
meals or not taking in enough calories leaves you with low energy,
compromises your health and definitely does not aid in weight loss.
When your body is deprived of needed nutrients, its response is to
store food during your future meals. The response dates back to the
early days of existence when food was scarce and people potentially
needed to survive without a lot of food. The body starts anticipating
this cycle and stores food in order to avoid starvation in the future.
So although you take in fewer calories, you actually store more
calories and you also slow down your metabolism. The negative health,
energy and metabolism slow-down effects by far cancel out the
reduction in calorie intake.
So what should you do? The best way to keep your metabolism elevated
(not to mention help you maintain energy throughout the day and keep
your immune system strong) is to eat every two hours throughout the
day. Ideally you will have three full meals Ð breakfast, lunch and
dinner Ð and then have healthy snacks in between. This approach will
actually help you lose more weight, although it is not intuitive.
If you are one of the 70 million Americans currently on a diet, I
propose that you try a new approach: Eat every two hours, watch your
portions, take in plenty of water and crank up your metabolism by
doing interval workouts (visit www.momentumfs.com/flylady for a free
sample interval workout). This will enable you to drop the word diet
and help you adopt a healthy and sustainable new lifestyle.
Good luck and keep it fun!
Please remember these important keys to success:
- Take Baby Steps
- Avoid Making Excuses
- STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Be Proud of Yourself when you are done exercising
- HAVE FUN!
Take care ladies,
